CME Information

Course Overview

A natural role of progesterone is to help maintain pregnancy. As evidence accrues from controlled trials, the use of progestogens (natural and synthetic progestin forms of progesterone) for women with prior preterm birth is increasingly regarded as beneficial. Still, progestogen use for these women is inhibited by lack of information about effectiveness, optimal formulations, administration routes, doses and timing of drug delivery, modifiers of treatment effect, and a need for more data on short- and long-term risks. Also unresolved is whether other at-risk groups can benefit from progestogens.

This activity presents the results from the comparative effectiveness review (CER), Effectiveness of Progestogens for Prevention of Preterm Birth, which was developed by the Vanderbilt Evidence-based Practice Center for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) under Contract No. 290-2007-10065-I and is available online at www.effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/pretermbirth.cfm.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Evaluate the likelihood of prevention of preterm birth by progestogen treatment for women with particular known risk factors.
  • Identify gaps in the evidence about benefits and adverse effects of progestogen treatment to prevent preterm birth.
  • Interpret what is known about the effectiveness of the several formulations of progestogens used for preventing preterm birth.

Target Audience

This CME activity is designed to meet the educational needs of obstetricians, primary care physicians, nurses, midwives, physician assistants and other healthcare professionals who treat pregnant women at risk of preterm birth.

Method of Participation

This activity is in PowerPoint file format and is accompanied by talking points and references linked to PubMed abstracts.
