Congresswoman Kuster Tapped for Two Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittees

Washington, D.C. – A week after being named to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) today announced her appointment to both the Subcommittee on Health and the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

“I’m honored to receive these subcommittee appointments on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee,” said Kuster. “On the Health Subcommittee, I will work with members of both parties to develop innovative improvements in veterans’ health services, fight for greater access to health facilities for New Hampshire veterans, work to end veteran homelessness, and improve health services for female veterans, including those who have been victims of sexual assault. I’m also excited to join the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, where I will advocate for our veterans, protect American taxpayers, and work to ensure that every dollar in the VA’s budget is responsibly spent and used to the greatest benefit of our veterans.”

The Subcommittee on Health has jurisdiction over the Veterans Health Administration, including medical services, medical support and compliance, medical facilities, medical and prosthetic research, and major and minor construction.  The Subcomittee on Oversight and investigations has broad jurisdiction over veterans’ matters, including oversight over the Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal agencies that serve our nation’s veterans.

Kuster also announced today that the first bill she is cosponsoring in Congress is the Veterans Health Equity Act, legislation introduced by Representative Carol Shea-Porter that has received broad, bipartisan support in recent years, including from Senators Shaheen, Ayotte, and Gregg, as well as Representatives Hodes, Bass, and Guinta. The legislation requires that the VA ensure that all eligible veterans in New Hampshire have access to either a full-service VA hospital in the state or comparable medical services provided through contract with other in-state providers.

“I’m proud that the first bill I’m cosponsoring is bipartisan legislation that will help ensure that New Hampshire’s veterans have access to the high-quality health care they deserve,” Kuster said.
