Congresswoman Kuster Statement on President Obama’s State of the Union Address

Feb 12, 2013
Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union address.

“In his speech tonight, President Obama focused on what remains our nation’s top priority: bringing Republicans and Democrats together in a bipartisan fashion to help create jobs and economic opportunity for middle class families across the country.

“As our economy continues to recover, we need to be doing everything we can to support job creation and economic growth. We all know that businesses, not government, are the engine of job creation. What the government can and must do is create an environment that helps the private sector create jobs. That means investing in a 21st century workforce, developing affordable clean energy, and cutting red tape and streamlining regulations for small businesses.

“As the President made clear, growing our economy and creating good jobs also requires that both parties come together to reduce the deficit in a balanced, responsible way. Republicans and Democrats have already reduced the deficit by more than $2.5 trillion, and both parties can and should work together to find additional savings and root out wasteful spending. But we need to do it in a balanced, bipartisan way that will help grow our economy and protect the middle class.

“The truth is, we can only meaningfully address these challenges and do what’s right for hardworking New Hampshire families if Republicans and Democrats put politics aside and come together. In the months to come, I look forward to working with the President and members of both parties to find bipartisan, common sense solutions to the challenges we face as a nation.”
