The NIH Director

Comments on receiving the 2009 National Medal of Science Award

"I am deeply honored to receive this recognition from President Obama. It is humbling to be among a group of such outstanding individuals receiving the award. I have had the privilege of leading the Human Genome Project and other genetics research projects that hold great promise to improve the health of people in this country and around the world. I accept this award on behalf of the multitude of individuals around the world who have dedicated their lives to accelerating our understanding of the human DNA instruction book, and who have made the genome sequence freely available to all as a critical stepping stone to diagnosing, treating and curing disease. I have been honored to work with such heroes. Now, as the NIH Director, I will do everything in my power to advance all lines of promising research toward the goal of better health for all."

Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., Director, National Institutes of Health
