Too Early to Tell if Dry January Will Affect Summer Water Supply

January precipitation was below normal across most of Idaho according to the latest water supply outlook report released this week by Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The report shows the snowpack decreased by up to 30 percentage points from a month ago.

New USDA Funding Program Focuses on Improving Soil Health

The Natural Resources Conservation Service is rolling out a new initiative that encourages improving soil health. In Idaho, the initiative focuses on reducing wind and water erosion issues by increasing soil health. Producers interested in implementing conservation practices emphasizing soil health may apply for technical and financial assistance by March 15, 2013 for fiscal year 2013 funding.

Local Free Workshops Aim to Improve Soil Health

Producers in Eastern Washington and North Idaho seeking to improve their farm’s soil can attend a free soil health workshop in mid-February. National and local presenters from the Natural Resources Conservation Service will teach participants how to protect and improve the soil habitat. The workshop will be offered on three different days and in different locations:
 

· February 12 - Spangle, WA - Harvester Restaurant, 410 W 1st
· February 13 - Colfax, WA - First Methodist Church, 109 S. Mill St.
· February 14 - Lewiston, ID - Red Lion Hotel
