Description:

The Government of Ethiopia’s Health Financing Reform institutionalizes a sustainable health financing system that accommodates alternative financing and management mechanisms, increasing the net resources available to health care facilities as the user fees are added to the budget they receive from existing federal and regional block grants. USAID works with regional governments to consolidate and scale up reforms, support the Ministry of Health in the implementation of community and social health insurance, and collect data and information to help inform policy changes.

Expected Results:

  • Passage of insurance laws
  • Assist Government of Ethiopia in rolling out community health insurance and expanding national health insurance
  • Increase sustainability of hospitals by opening private wings
  • Outsource clinical services
  • Improve financial information for decision-making by financing national health accounts, costing analyses and other financial surveys
