Goal:
Grant scholarship money to complete secondary education to poor rural Ethiopian female students to who have demonstrated strong academic performance and successfully completed grade eight.
Objectives:
- Motivate disadvantaged but academically high-performing secondary school girls, in particular those from low-income families, with physical disabilities, or who are orphans.
- Monitor the academic performance of the girls to ensure their stay in school and success in their studies.
Description:
In Ethiopia, the repetition rates for girls are high compared to boys. The situation is more severe at the secondary school level – with only 35 percent enrollment rate for girls. Many girls coming from low-income families are unable to attend secondary school, even if they succeed in their examinations, because secondary schools are located far from rural primary schools. Girls who want to attend secondary school from poor families usually have to stay with a relative or family friend who will be willing to provide them with food and accommodations, and pay other educational expenses, creating a hardship for the family and often contributing to school dropout or a decision not to enroll. Aware of this situation, USAID awarded a new grant to support girls from selected secondary schools in four regions. This project distributes a monthly stipend that can be used for school kits, food, clothing, school fees, lodging and transportation.
Expected Results:
- Grant 1,022 scholarships to selected girls in four regions.
