Deputy Director

The deputy director assists the NIEHS director in the formulation and implementation of plans and policies necessary to carry out the missions of the NIEHS. The deputy director works with the director in the administrative management of the NIEHS, speaks on behalf of the Institute as appropriate, and represents the director in her absence or as designated.

Richard Woychik, Ph.D., is a mammalian geneticist with a distinguished career in molecular genetics and science administration. Most recently and since 2002, he served as president and CEO of Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, and also functioned as the director of the laboratory’s NCI designated Cancer Center. While at Jackson Laboratory, he led the organization through a period of significant growth, with the laboratory budget almost doubling from $103 million in 2002 to $200 million in 2010. Under Woychik’s leadership, the laboratory also completed construction and renovation projects totaling $80 million, launched a major faculty expansion program, and substantially expanded external funding to support collaborative science projects.

 

Prior to leading Jackson Laboratory, Woychik’s professional history also included positions as the chief scientific officer for Lynx Therapeutics, Hayward, CA; head of the Parke-Davis Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, Alameda, CA; professor within the Departments of Pediatrics, Genetics and Pharmacology at the Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio; and senior research scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

 

Woychik completed his B.S. and M.S. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and earned his Ph.D. in molecular biology at Case Western Reserve University in 1984. He received his postdoctoral training in the Laboratory of Philip Leder at Harvard Medical School with fellowship support from the Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund and from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
