Moldova Civil Society Strengthening Program

The Moldova Civil Society Strengthening Program strengthens representative democracy in Moldova through support for a constituent-driven, sustainable civil society sector.  The program provides on-site technical assistance towards: (i) enhancing the skills of civil society organizations to effectively represent citizen interests; (ii) improving the governance and management of civil society organizations; (iii) strengthening the legal and fiscal framework for civil society; (iv) promoting the diversification of financial resources available to civil society organizations.

At the tender age of 10, Victor (his name has been changed), already knows firsthand what a judge is, and what a trial looks like. Still worse, the reason he has seen the inside of a courtroom was to testify against those who had sexually molested him. For any child, courtrooms can be intimidating and confusing.

Local community members, businesses, and public authorities help a group of seniors in need.

“For the first time there was a ramp by the entrance to the polling station in Ialoveni. Also, doors were open, the voting table was quite high, and the wheelchair could enter easily. Aliona Tipa, who was born with a physical disability and is confined to a wheelchair, finds it difficult to even get out of her house. "I can leave home only with the help of my mother or relatives," explains Aliona. But she does make every effort to get out of the house.

On September 26 and 27, 2011, the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) Moldova Civil Society Strengthening Program, and the European Center for Not-for-Profit Law (ECNL), in partnership with the National Council of NGOs in Moldova, organized an International Conference on State Financing for CSOs.

A new series of investigative journalism television shows, supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), offers hard-hitting, fact-based portrayals of news and events to viewers in Moldova. The series is produced by the Association of Independent TV Journalists (AITVJ), which is supported under the USAID/Moldova Civil Society Strengthening Program.

“I have two neighbors: One is paralyzed and the other is blind. Several times a week I help them with errands.” This is how Vadim Boiarschi, a 77 year-old retiree in Moldova, describes his volunteer activities with Soarta, a Soroca-based non-governmental organization (NGO) that serves the needs of the elderly. The NGO is supported by the U.S.

"Come and meet the NGOs working in your community, and talk personally with their leaders and volunteers," this was the message of the NGO Fair held on April 19, 2011, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Puricani neighborhood residents repairing the road as part of the USAID project Participation Is Your Chance!

Repairing a road that connects a remote neighborhood with the rest of Zirnesti, a village in the Cahul region of Moldova, brought together a community that collectively solved a long-standing issue. The road project was a part of the USAID/Moldova Civil Society Strengthening Program, which aims to increase citizen participation and activism.
