Small Grant Programs appropriate for behavioral researcher applicants
The National Cancer Institute offers two opportunities for small grant funding.

- Pilot and feasibility projects
- Development and testing of new methodologies
- Secondary data analyses
- Development of new research technology
- NCI Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Program (NCI Omnibus R21)
Small Grants, also known as R03 awards, are short-term awards to provide support for discrete, well-defined projects:
Applicants may request a project period of up to two years and a budget for direct costs that does not exceed $100,000 for the entire project period.
Applications will be assigned to a NCI-designated special emphasis panel.
Applications submitted under this mechanism should break new ground or extend previous discoveries toward new research directions or applications. Projects of limited cost or scope that use widely accepted approaches and methods within well established fields are better suited for the R03 small grant mechanism.
Applicants may request a project period of up to two years and a budget for direct costs that does not exceed $275,000 for the entire project period.
Applications will be assigned to a NCI-designated special emphasis panel.

Background
In 1999, the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released the first investigator-initiated Small Grant Program (SGP) for Behavioral Research in Cancer Control (R03) funding opportunity announcement (FOA). After surveying the landscape of the field, the DCCPS’s newly developed Behavioral Research Program (BRP) identified the R03 mechanism as an opportunity to stimulate the field by encouraging new investigators and established investigators interested in refocusing their expertise to apply their skills to behavioral cancer prevention and control research. The PAR was reissued 6 additional times over the course of thirteen years (PAR 99-006, PAR 02-037, PAR 04-020,PAR 06-73 and PAR 06-458, PAR 09-003, and PAR 12-144). The BRP-SGP expired on October 19, 2012 and was essentially replaced by the newly released NCI Omnibus R03 Small Grants Program for Cancer Research and the NCI Omnibus R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Program.
