Military leaders see danger in Congress not passing defense budget

Congress needs to “suck it up” and pass a defense budget, as well as avoid sequestration, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told soldiers with the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team Thursday. Without the 2013 budget in place, the Pentagon is forced to keep operating on last year’s budget.

More women pursuing college with help of GI Bill

Military veteran Sara Bergeron finished finals recently at California Lutheran University, one step closer to her goal of a bachelor's degree. She partly credits GI benefits. "Without my post-9/11 GI Bill, I wouldn't be able to go to school and support my family," said Bergeron, 22, of Camarillo.

Wright State 'changing lives' for over 45 years

Melissa Kelbley never thought she would graduate from college. But she had never heard of Wright State University. In June, Kelbley became one of the nearly 98,000 people to earn a degree from Wright State in the university’s 45 years. Wright State uniquely allowed Kelbley, now 23, to attend college with its services for people with physical disabilities.

Investigation finds significant drug use, party culture at Naval Academy

An 11-month investigation last year not only ended dozens of military careers, it also uncovered a drug culture replete with users and dealers. Agents not only found use of synthetic marijuana, called “spice,” but that some mids had used cocaine, mephedrone, mescaline and psychedelic mushrooms.

Low student-teacher ratio benefit of Army's 170th Brigade inactivation

Just before Christmas, the last of the 170th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s 4,500 soldiers will roll out of here for good, leaving this small-town Army base with fewer than half the Americans it has had for decades. While some who remain lament the reduction in jobs and facility hours, there’s at least one clear winner from the cutbacks: education.

Missouri college students move toward military commissions

For some 70 college students, Thursday was a special day at Missouri Western State University. Each of the students carries a second title — cadet. All are members of the composite Army Reserve Officers Training Corps' battalion, headquartered at Missouri Western and known as the Pony Express Battalion.
