Washington, Oct 9, 2000 -

(Washington, DC) – Representative Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) today voiced opposition to the proposed Guardian pipeline project.  The Guardian pipeline would carry natural gas between Joliet, Illinois and Ixonia, Wisconsin, with a lateral run from Ixonia to Germantown, Wisconsin.

The Guardian pipeline project, owned in part by WICOR, runs through Sensenbrenner’s Ninth Congressional District.  Ninth District residents have repeatedly voiced concerns about the pipeline’s environmental, safety, and economic impact on their communities.  Many have also expressed concerns about potential negative impact on their property.

Sensenbrenner further points to plans by Wisconsin Energy, the parent company of WICOR, to convert the Port Washington, Wisconsin power plant from coal-burning to natural gas-powered.  The Guardian pipeline’s proposed route raises serious doubts regarding it’s potential benefit in meeting this new natural gas requirement due to it’s geographic distance from both Ixonia and Germantown.

“Clearly, many questions about current and future natural gas needs in Wisconsin must be answered before the Wisconsin Public Service Commission and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission move forward in granting a permit to begin work on the Guardian pipeline.  Further, the needs of residents whose properties and communities will be affected must be considered.  Many of my constituents have made it evident to me that they do not want this pipeline in their backyards.
The bottom line is the Guardian pipeline project has simply not been proven necessary, efficient, or even desired.  Further study is necessary to ensure the energy needs of Wisconsin residents are met in a satisfactory manner,” said Sensenbrenner.
