Washington, DC, Dec 18, 2007 -

Menomonee Falls Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner issued the following statement today after voting against the massive 2008 omnibus appropriations bill late last night:

“I voted ‘No’ for this half-trillion dollar behemoth of a bill because there’s plenty here that is unacceptable to me and to my constituents. For starters, it is loaded with almost 9,000 earmarks for Members of Congress, including for those who were elected to the House by special election well after the deadline for submitting earmarks. In addition to the exorbitant pork, this legislation dilutes the impact of previous law designed to protect our nation’s southern borders, and delays certain provisions of my Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

“What I don’t understand is how the people who voted for this bill can justify their vote. I sure would be curious to hear what they say when they’re pressed by their constituents on their knowledge of all the provisions in a 3,565-page document that stands over a foot tall, and that was made available to Members less than 24 hours before the vote.”
