Questions > FAQ Topic

What is the Software Development Forum?

The SDF is intended to be an information exchange forum (and eventually the working group) to establish software development standards and the desired/required software development environment for the AF. The target audience includes Program Management Offices and their industry partners that develop Mission/Functional software applications.

Do I have to attend the AFCEA Cyberspace Symposium to attend the Software Development Forum?

No. The SDF is a separate event, not related to the symposium, and open to the public. SDF participants are not required to attend the symposium.

What is the purpose of the first SDF?

Information sharing with software developers. There are many changes taking place across the Air Force and Department of Defense. This initial SDF will address what steps the AF is taking to prepare for the upcoming changes and standard development, as well as provide a venue to solicit input from industry.

Why should I attend the SDF?

The SDF will provide attendees with a central resource or community for collaborating, raising challenges, and identifying solutions to help mitigate or reduce technical risks and costs associated with developing software applications requiring integration on the AFNet.

How does the forum relate to Application Hosting?

The decision(s) about where applications are hosted is still to be determined. The Air Force may eventually use Dynamic Resource Provisioning (a.k.a, Policy-based Management and Virtualization). This would require software developers to design/develop platform agnostic Web Applications to utilize/expose Authoritative Data Sources using Web Services. There is an on-going effort to write approximately 130 Functional Specifications for key infrastructure components that will provide detail network design guidance.

What is the plan for the SDF?

The first meeting will be held 8 a.m. to noon, Feb. 7, 2012 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo. After this initial event, the goal is to hold a forum every six months, as well as establish an online communication forum among the affected groups.

How do I register? Is there a registration deadline?

Register by filling out the online registration form and emailing it to afnic.eacr@us.af.mil. The registration deadline will be Jan. 25, however, there is limited seating for the SDF. If it reaches maximum capacity before Jan. 25, registration will close early. Please send an e-mail to afnic.eacr@us.af.mil if you have questions or need additional information.

What topics will be presented at the SDF in February 2012?

Air Force Service Development and Delivery Process
The Air Force Chief Technical Officer will provide a brief on the Air Force Service Development and Delivery Process (SDDP) and will lay the foundation on the new SDDP and the associated consolidated enterprise IT baseline.

Application Hosting Environments
The Defense Information Systems Agency Rapid Access Computing Environment Program Office will provide a presentation on current initiatives to address development and hosting environment challenges.

Case Studies on Application Performance

AFNIC and AFMC Expeditionary Combat Support System Program Office will share the lessons learned and discuss the challenges/ improvements found from performance issues encountered during integration. The intent of this briefing is to demonstrate the hard work and cooperation necessary to integrate applications onto the AFNet.

Software Development Standards and Security
The Air Force Software Assurance Center of Excellence will provide an overview of application development standards and software assurance initiatives to integrate security on the front end of the software development life cycle.

When and where is the SDF being held?

The first meeting will be 8 a.m. to noon, Feb. 7, 2012 at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo. After this initial event, the goal is to hold a forum every six months, as well as establish an online communication forum among the affected groups.
