NETL continues its involvement in the environmental issues associated with both the utilization and disposal of coal combustion byproducts. NETL currently funds many projects covering a variety of environmental issues associated with CUB through the Combustion By-Products Recycling Consortium.

With the EPA regulatory decision in December 2000, regarding the regulation of Hg emissions from coal fired electric utilities; NETL has begun to focus on the effect of mercury controls on EW&R - Coal Utilization By-Products (CUB). To this end, we are funding projects that will look at the fate of mercury in residues.
