FOIA - Freedom of Information Act

New FOIA Guidance

Motor carrier-related records are available from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). For information on obtaining motor carrier-related records, visit the FMCSA's FOIA web page (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/foia).

To find FHWA records and information that are publicly available without submitting a FOIA request, please visit the electronic reading room.

Remember...FOIA provides only for the release of records-it is not the appropriate vehicle to ask general questions of the agency. When you submit a FOIA request for FHWA documents (FOIA), you must:

  • make your request in writing and include your name, address, and a telephone number where we can reach you if we have questions about your request.

  • clearly indicate that you are making your request under FOIA.

  • reasonably, and specifically as possible, describe the documents you seek.

Before submitting your FOIA request, please refer to our easy-to-use FOIA request guide. It contains addresses of FHWA's field locations and other information about submitting a FOIA request.

You may submit your request via mail, fax, or e-mail:
