850th Horizontal Engineer Company headed to Afghanistan

Minnesota National Guard The Cambridge community gave the 850th Horizontal Engineer Co. a heartfelt send-off at a departure ceremony March 3 at the Cambridge-Isanti High School.

The Minnesota National Guard's local horizontal construction company, which is headquartered in Cambridge and has the 682nd Engineer Battalion as its higher headquarters in Willmar, is deploying 149 soldiers to Afghanistan for one year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Iraq War left mark on Minn. National Guard members, families

Minnesota National Guard ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Iraq War, which started 10 years ago today, left a lasting imprint on the men and women who served and on their families.

One Minnesotan who served in the war, 31-year-old guardsman 1st Lt. Jesse Pope, arrived in Baghdad on Halloween in 2004.

To calm his nerves, the St. Paul native turned the music in his Humvee up full-blast as the convoy entered the city for the first time.



Tankers Conduct Winter Operations

Minnesota National Guard CAMP RIPLEY, Minn. Armor crewmen of the 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment moved out into the snow for winter drivers training and refinement of tank operations March 9-10.

"Winter drivers,training is a perishable skill which needs to be refreshed in order to instill safety and competence for our combat vehicle crews," said Sgt. 1st Class Brian Reiten, unit readiness NCO for Charlie Company, 2-136.



World Gains New Pope, Minnesota National Guard a New Priest

Minnesota National Guard ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Roman Catholic Church chose a new pope today.  The 265th pope is father Jorge Bergoglio, a Jesuit priest from Argentina and he has taken the name of Pope Francis I. This is a very exciting time for the Catholic world and it is also an exciting time for the Minnesota Army National Guard as they have commissioned a new Catholic priest. Chaplain (Capt.) Michael Creegan started his first day of service at the Minnesota National Guard at the Veterans Service Building Feb. 28 the final day of Pope Benedict XVI service. 

Creagan is the one of two priests for the Minnesota Army National Guard.   The other is Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Jerome Fehn who is deployed to Afghanistan. There are also two Catholic priests in the Minnesota Air National Guard.



Families Say Goodbyes As Nat'l Guard Soldiers Deploy In Cambridge

Minnesota National Guard CAMBRIDGE, Minn. (WCCO) - More than a hundred Minnesota National Guard Soldiers said goodbye to their families.

Sunday, the soldiers' families packed into Cambridge High School for a send-off ceremony.

The troops are heading overseas to Afghanistan -- many of them for their first deployment.

The Minnesota-based soldiers are part of an engineer company and will operate heavy equipment, repair and maintain roads and train the Afghan Army in construction.



Minnesota Soldiers compete for spot on Combatives Team

Minnesota National Guard Over 40 Soldiers participated in the Minnesota Army Combatives Team's Third Annual Combatives Tryout Tournament at Camp Ripley in February. Between competitors and tournament workers, this year's tournament drew more participation than previous years. 

This year's tournament featured 36 Soldiers from across the state vying for a shot on the elite team to represent Minnesota at the National Guard Tournament and the All Army Combatives Tournament.  Soldiers competing had varying levels of experience, and ranged in rank from private to captain.
