VA developed Veterans and Radiation, a Veterans Health Initiative independent study guide, to provide clinicians an overview of issues facing Veteran patients who may have been exposed to ionizing radiation or non-ionizing radiation during military service. - Benefits for health effects of radiation exposure
Veterans who were exposed to radiation during military service may be eligible for a variety of VA benefits, including an Ionizing Radiation Registry health exam, health care, and disability compensation for diseases associated with exposure. VA is conducting a new study, "Cancer Mortality among Military Participants at U.S. Nuclear Weapons Tests," to assess the risk of cancer among 120,000 Cold War-era Veterans who participated in U.S. atmospheric nuclear weapons tests between 1946 and 1958.
