The Energy Resources Program has completed numerous oil and gas resource assessments and continues research on the contribution and significance of reserve (field) growth. Field growth is the increase in total proved reserves of an existing field through time. This increase is based upon geological and engineering data with reasonable certainty to be recoverable with existing economic and operating conditions. Field growth occurs in almost all petroleum provinces of the world and is considered the most important source for additional reserves in the United States. Identified resources exceeding the proved reserves are added to existing fields by a variety of methods including: field extension, field revision, improved recovery efficiency, improved reservoir characterization, and the addition of new pools or reservoirs
