NOAA AWARDS CONTRACT FOR LIGHTNING DATA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded a $5.2 million one-year contract to Hughes STX Corporation of Lanham, Md., for Systems Engineering and Technical Support Services (SETSS) to the National Weather Service. The contract, which includes four one-year option periods, has a total estimated value of $27.8 million.

Under the contract Hughes STX will support NWS development and fielding of automated weather observation systems and weather forecast information systems. The contractor will also support the process of restructuring NWS field operations, facilities and support services, and the communication of meteorological and hydrological data among the various NWS forecast offices throughout the nation.

Hughes STX will provide services to include identifying and making technical recommendations on the relative merits of alternative solutions to system problems; evaluating test data and conducting design studies; testing and evaluating the performance of weather observation sensors; monitoring other contractor activities and evaluating their reports; and assisting in preparing and updating NWS strategic plans and schedules.

The new contract resulted from a highly competitive solicitation, where over 200 parties had requested to be included in the initial mailing.
