U.S. Rep. Fred Upton made his first visit to Sturgis Molded Products on Monday.

Upton, R-St. Joseph, was accompanied by his wife, Amey, and community leaders including Sturgis City Manager Michael Hughes and Mayor Kenneth Rhodes.

Mark Weishaar, Sturgis Molded Products president, welcomed the guests and led them on a tour.

Visitors said they were impressed by the variety of products produced at SMP.

The company produces millions of plastic dose cups for cough medicine, baby scoops and an array of plastic automotive products, such as housing for airbags.

Employees on all three shifts were invited to attend a short assembly.

“My focus has always been jobs and the economy,” Upton told the group. “I can remember five to six years ago when you were down to 30 employees because of the economy. And today, you have three shifts working.”

Upton said the goal in his district is to grow the number of jobs by 100,000 in 2022.

He represents 700,000 people in Michigan’s 6th Congressional District.
