KALAMAZOO GAZETTE: Korean War veteran Roger Jay Williams presented with several medals during ceremony in Kalamazoo


Kalamazoo, MI, Sep 6, 2012 - A local Korean War veteran was presented on Thursday with several medals for his military service in the 1950s.

U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, presented the medals to Roger Jay Williams during a ceremony at the congressman's Kalamazoo District Office.

Williams, a native of Kalamazoo, served in the Navy from 1952 to 1956, enlisting at age 17, according to a news release from Upton's office. He served as a sheet metal worker, including aboard the U.S.S. Wasp, a recommissioned attack carrier.

Upton presented Williams with the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal with Europe Clasp, the China Service Medal (extended), the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Following his honorable discharge, Williams worked in the city of Kalamazoo's transportation department for more than four decades.
