Goal:

  • Address key health human resource shortages to achieve maternal, neonatal and child health goals, specifically reduce infectious diseases such as malaria, TB, HIV/AIDs and child and maternal deaths.

Project Objectives:

  • Improve health management, regulatory and governance systems including retention, recruitment and deployment 
  • Expand availability of midwives, anesthetists, health extension workers 
  • Strengthen educational institutions and faculty and quality of health worker training

Goal:

Provide pharmaceutical management system strengthening support to implement malaria treatment programs at national and regional health facility levels.

Objectives:

  • Provide technical, strategic, managerial and operational support to implement and strengthen anti-malaria drug management activities in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia, thereby contributing to the President's Malaria Inititive (PMI) goal of a achieving a 70 percent reduction in malaria-associated mortality by 2013.

TB CARE I

Goal:

Improve case detection and treatment success rates of TB in Ethiopia.

Project Objectives:

  • Assist the Government of Ethiopia (GoE) in scaling up of drug management of Multi-Drug Resistant TB (MDR-TB)
  • Strengthen laboratory networking
  • Assist the GoE in the coordination of the TB control program

Description:

TB CARE I assists the GoE in addressing the country’s TB-specific challenges, including extremely low case detection, the emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB, and TB/HIV co-infection. To address these challenges, TB CARE I provides support on a national level in four major technical areas:

Goal:

Assist local health offices in prevention and control of TB to reduce mortality and morbidity due to TB

Project Objectives:

  • Expand and enhance Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS)
  • Assist selected zones in reaching case detection of 70% and exceed treatment success rate of 85%
  • Assist local health offices in establishing a courier system to transport samples of suspected Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) TB cases to culture centers and deliver reports back to patients
