    SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is susceptible to several types of natural hazards, including floods, tornadoes, snow and ice storms, droughts, even earthquakes. While it's impossible to avoid such events, there are several steps communities and people can take to prevent injuries or deaths and reduce property losses.

    Throughout January, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) will offer tips for protecting homes and businesses and highlight successful hazard mitigation efforts as part of its 2013 Preparedness Campaign.

    SPRINGFIELD – Parents of children in day care will be better informed about levels of radon in their child’s facility under a new law that took effect Jan. 1, 2013.  Licensed day care centers and day care homes are now required to test for the radioactive gas, and beginning Jan. 1, 2014, day care centers will need to show proof the facility has been tested for radon within the last three years as part of the initial application or license renewal process

    SPRINGFIELD – The state’s website for community and individual information disaster preparedness is now even easier to use. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) today launched an updated Ready Illinois website (www.Ready.Illinois.gov) to help connect people with information they need to be prepared for many types of emergencies.

  •  IEMA Offering Potassium Iodide to Residents Within 10 Miles of Nuclear Power Plants

    The Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) today announced plans to begin offering free Potassium Iodide (KI) pills to residents living within a 10-mile radius of the state’s six operating nuclear power plants. More than 60,000 homes within the Emergency Planning Zones (EPZs) of each plant soon will receive a voucher that can be redeemed for the pills at participating Walgreens stores.
