I spoke on the House floor to urge my colleagues to get rid of an alarming loophole that has allowed more than 2,000 suspected terrorists to legally purchase firearms during the last 11 years in the U.S. We don’t allow felons, domestic abusers, and the adjudicated mentally ill, to purchase guns. The same should apply to suspected terrorists. Share your thoughts and e-mail us at LujanGrishamGVP@mail.house.gov

Today, the House passed my amendment to the Resilient Federal Forests Act that would allow the U.S. Forest Service to establish a pilot program to execute contracts with Tribes under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA). ISDEAA contracts allow Tribes to manage and implement federal programs in Indian country, which help ensure that programs meet tribal needs and support tribal self-determination and self-governance. Allowing the Forest Service to execute ISDEAA contracts with Tribes for projects under the Tribal Forest Protection Act of 2004 will improve the Forest Service’s ability to partner with Tribes to work on projects that impact tribal lands and forests.

During this week’s hearing on SNAP, I got the opportunity to discuss the importance of nutrition education and encouraged grocery stores to hire nutritionists and dieticians to help customers, who shop with limited resources under SNAP benefits, to choose healthy foods. This is especially important for people with special diets and chronic illness. I also asked that stores expand successful programs like the AARP and Kroger grocery store nutrition tour program to states like New Mexico, that have high poverty rates, high obesity rates, and high risks for chronic illness. http://www.aarp.org/health/healthy-living/info-2015/hungry-seniors-health-nutrition.html

I am alarmed by the testimony of Betsy DeVos, President-Elect Trump’s nominee to serve as Education Secretary. Most troubling is her lack of understanding, and her refusal to commit to enforcing disability protections for all children. My sister had a disability, and my mother fought to ensure she could benefit from a public education. Children with special needs have incredible potential to pursue careers of their choice and lead meaningful lives. To unilaterally determine that any child doesn’t deserve to succeed is shameful. We can’t allow this ignorance of our federal civil rights, which seems to be a common characteristic among the incoming President’s top picks to run the federal government. https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/3a0e6168-da8f-11e6-9a36-1d…

Senate education committee is deeply divided over DeVos, who said she looks forward to improving the nation’s schools but she sidestepped or stumbled on several issues important to Democrats.

Often times, I stop late at night or early in the morning at the MLK Monument in Washington. I’ve read many of his quotes in books, but to see his words engraved on that larger-than-life monument is inspiring. They somehow come to life. I go there for guidance, and I’m never disappointed. Thank you to Rev. John D. Hill and the wonderful people at the Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church for allowing me to celebrate with them today.

Everyone is affected by Republican efforts to dismantle the ACA and threaten Medicare and Medicaid. New Mexico loses thousands of jobs and families lose access to health care. We need to be loud and aggressive, and remind them that we are here and we will continue to share our stories and fight to #KeepNMCovered

The big winners if Republicans repeal the ACA will be pharmaceutical and health insurance companies. Watch my remarks on the floor of the House today.

I proudly supported and led the effort to invest $5 million in the Paseo del Norte/I-25 project when I served on the Bernalillo County Commission. In addition to relieving traffic congestion, I'm happy to see real jobs and development resulting from that project, as we predicted. We need to invest in more infrastructure around the state that is tied to economic development. https://www.abqjournal.com/…/cabelas-at-journal-center-is-a…

Work is officially underway on the new Cabela's at Paseo and I-25, anchoring what will ultimately be a $68 million, mixed-use development including other retail, restaurants and apartments. The 21-acre development, called Legacy Journal Center,…

I'm a proud co-sponsor of the Presidential Accountability Act. My respected colleague, Representative Elijah E. Cummings put together this great video that explains the Emoluments Clause and asks what's standing between Donald Trump and the U.S. Constitution? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtVz62r8sSY

Emolument. It's a word that a lot of people have been using lately, but what does it mean? In 1787, our founding fathers came together in Philadelphia to dra...

The employees at WIPP have delivered steady, deliberate progress that led to today's re-op-opening of this critical project. I appreciate their commitment to the safe and secure storage of our nation's nuclear waste.

I love that our entrepreneur community in New Mexico isn't limited by age. Alissa Chavez turned a great idea, which started as a science project, into a practical solution to a potentially deadly problem. Thank you, Alissa, for you ingenuity and hard work. https://www.abqjournal.com/…/young-inventor-creates-app-to-…
