WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Michael Grimm (R-NY) issued the following statement in response to the news that U.S. Marine Jon Hammar has been released from a Mexican prison and has arrived safely on American soil:

“The release of Jon Hammar is truly a Christmas blessing. This innocent American hero was wrongfully detained for far too long. As a fellow Marine, I could not stand idly by without taking action to bring him home, and I am proud to have been a part of the effort in Congress that ultimately led to his release. I welcome Jon Hammar home with open arms, and I wish him and his family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Rep. Grimm is a Marine combat veteran of the first Gulf War. Earlier this week he called for a U.S. boycott of travel to Mexico until Hammar’s release.
