The NHSDA Report:  Binge Drinking Among Underage Persons

Highlights:

  • A binge drinker is defined as a person who drank five or more drinks on the same occasion on at least one day in the past 30 days. 
  • In 2000, almost 7 million persons aged 12 to 20 was a binge drinker; that is, about one in five persons under the legal drinking age was a binge drinker.
  • The rate of binge drinking among underage persons (19 percent) was almost as high as among adults aged 21 or older (21 percent).
  • Underage persons who reported binge drinking were 7 times more likely to report illicit drugs during the past month than underage persons who did not binge drink.

This Short Report, The NHSDA Report:  Binge Drinking Among Underage Persons, is based on SAMHSA's  National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), now called the  National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).  The survey is conducted by the Office of Applied Studies (OAS) in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is the primary source of information on the prevalence, patterns, and consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and for selected mental health measures in the general U.S. civilian non institutionalized population, age 12 and older.   SAMHSA's National Survey on Drug Use & Health also provides estimates for drug use and for selected mental health measures by State.
