NABIR ORFRC field projects

Stanford and ORNL two-stage uranium reduction experiments
The Stanford and ORNL field project successfully immobilized subsurface uranium by first conditioning ground water above-ground, and then treating the conditioned ground water in the subsurface. This project team maintained uranium and technetium reduction in experimental flow cells for approximately two years, simulating a subsurface biocurtain. The team also found that co-contaminants in the subsurface (e.g., nitrate) and elevated concentrations of other chemicals (e.g., calcium) can inhibit the chemical reduction process and reoxidize uranium, making it more mobile. Principal investigators were Craig Criddle (Stanford) and Phil Jardine (ORNL).

Fact sheet project description as originally envisioned.
