FAQ: Information On Reapportionment And Contacting Your Representative In Congress

Greetings,

As many of you know, the Constitution of Pennsylvania requires that legislative districts for the U.S. House of Representatives be redrawn each decade following the federal census. This process is mandated by the Pennsylvania Constitution so that each citizen's vote ultimately carries the same weight in the ballot box.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania General Assembly approved the Final Reapportionment Plan which has been signed into law by Governor Tom Corbett. With national population increases and population changes here in the Commonwealth, the boundaries of Pennsylvania’s 5th District have been altered. On November 5, 2012, Pennsylvania residents elected representatives to the U.S. House of Representatives for the upcoming term, the 113th Congress, based on the newly reapportioned boundaries.

Note: Should your member of congress have changed based on the results of the last election, this change will not take effect until the start of the 113th Congress, on January 3, 2013.  Not until this date will new constituents of the 5th District be able to access services through www.thompson.house.gov.
