1st Armored Division and 1st Cavalry Division

In 1971, the 1st Armored Division's colors and unit names and designations were given to the 4th Armd Div's personnel then in Germany.

The 1st Cav. Div. and the division's personnel from Vietnam were sent to Fort Hood.

The 1st Cav. Div. became a test bed for new Army concepts was an airmobile infantry brigade air cavalry combat brigade, and an armor brigade combined in one division.

Many other new ideas were tested, such as airmobile motorcycle scouts, dune buggies, and other innovative ideas.

On Feb. 21, 1975, the TRICAP experiment was stopped and the 1st Cav. Div. became an armored division.

The 6th Cavalry Regiment was activated and became an air combat unit, following the pattern of the 1st Cav's air combat brigade.

North Fort Hood

During the 1970's North Fort Hood was a National Guard and reserve component training area. In the summer the facilities would be packed; and during the fall the facilities would be mothballed. The pattern continues today.

North Fort Hood provides these units a large maneuver area not normally present at their training sites.

Whole brigades can train in a tactical environment at North Fort Hood, this is sometimes the only time the entire unit can be together.

13th COSCOM Redesignated

In 1974, 13th Support Brigade was redesignated 13th COSCOM.

89th MP Brigade Transferred

In 1976, the 89th Military Police Brigade was transferred to Fort Hood.

2nd Armored Division deployed

In 1979, Co.D, 17th Engr. Bn, 2nd Armd. Div. (Forward); Troop C, 2nd Sqdn,1st Cav. Div, permanently restationed to Northern Germany.

Co. F, 17th Engr. Bn, 2ndArmd. Div. Troop F, 2nd Sqdn, 1st Cav. Div., is inactivated.
