Discover VA pharmacy careers.
Whether you're newly minted or an experienced pharmacist looking for a change, we invite you to explore the many opportunities and benefits VA affords, including a higher level of pharmacy practice that is patient-centered.
VA pharmacists are part of the interdisciplinary care team that includes physicians, nurses, and other health care specialists, who decide the best course of drug therapies in both inpatient and outpatient settings. They are eligible for prescriptive authority within their defined scopes of practice. All of these opportunities are possible because of our cutting edge technology which allows our pharmacists to enjoy a highly robust practice.
Simply put, a pharmacy career within the VA health care system will allow you to make the most of your training and experience.
Our pharmacists collaborate with patient care teams and help guide the best course of drug therapies. They provide direct patient education, as well as conduct therapeutic and pharmacokinetic consulting services. Many of our pharmacists obtain prescriptive authority within their defined scope of practice, and function as providers responsible for direct patient care.
VA pharmacists have the time to be patient focused because we utilize automation and pharmacy technicians to a higher degree. Our pharmacists work in a virtually paperless workplace that includes the automation of our industry-leading Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), a Bar Code Medication Administration system, and fully automated robotic dispensing systems.
The VA health care system also provides more diverse specialization opportunities and pharmacy career options than anywhere else in the private sector. Our pharmacists are at the bedside and in outpatient settings, but they also manage drug therapy clinics, conduct research, train pharmacy residents and students, hold academic appointments, publish, work with national associations, private and governmental agencies, create and implement programs and policies, and much more!
