The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) collaborates with USICH on ways in which energy consumption and conservation can be used to help low-income individuals and families avoid homelessness. DOE is also working with HUD and USICH on ways to help educate homeless support agencies on their ability to utilize weatherization for their supportive housing and for those clients that may be at-risk of losing their homes. The Weatherization Assistance Program provides funding for states to weatherize low-income dwellings in order to reduce energy costs allowing residents to conserve more of their income. The shelter system is also an eligible category for these funds, which includes homeless supportive housing. In addition, the State Energy Program provides grants to states to support energy efficiency and renewable energy programs and projects. Some state programs include homeless support agencies and assistance projects.
