Regarded as the "Wings of the Deep South," the mission of the 172d AW is to constantly improve our combat capability to defend our nation and support our state. The wing's vision is to be the most responsive, most resourceful and most respected airlift wing on the planet.
With its fleet of nine C-17 aircraft, the Mississippi Air National Guard unit has a global reach with the ability to move, supply or position assets anywhere - with unrivaled velocity and precision.

The wing command section includes the commander, vice commander, command post and the Command Chief Master Sergeant.

172d AW staff offices include:

Operations Group

The mission of this group is to train and supply mission ready tactical airlift and aeromedical aircrews for state, national and global contingencies. Subordinate units include:

Responsible for the maintenance of nine C-17 aircraft that provide tactical airlift, aeromedical and humanitarian services on a global level. Subordinate units include:

The 172d Mission Support Group provides mission support to over 1,200 military members who provide rapid, decisive, expeditionary combat support to the joint warfighter and sustainable base operating support to a community of military and civilian personnel and their families. The172d Mission Support Group also is responsible for developing combat-ready Airmen and a professional civilian workforce that protects the base community, provides quality of life services, maintains communications and real estate infrastructure, and equips and mobilizes the overall 172d Airlift Wing mission to deliver decisive combat power for global responses
