To further promote innovative research and facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary research teams, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Office of Research & Development (ORD) and Health Services Research & Development Service (VA HSR&D) have developed the Center of Innovation (COIN) Initiative program.

The mission of the COIN program is to engage clinical and operations partners, and increase the impact of health services research on specific areas of central importance to the health and health care of Veterans. Specifically, the COIN Initiative will:
  • Support innovative research that advances the understanding of the VA healthcare system;
  • Promote research in targeted areas that will contribute to short- and long-term improvements in VA care;
  • Train and mentor scientists at various stages of their career;
  • Enhance research collaboration within and across medical centers and between researchers and their health system partners;
  • Encourage innovative contributions by independent investigators working on emerging and VA-relevant health services research;
  • Facilitate implementation of research findings and improve the understanding of implementation within the VHA system; and,
  • Support the transformation of VHA into a continuous learning healthcare system.

Another important role of the COIN Initiative is to facilitate, where appropriate, productive partnerships between researchers and those internal "customers" who take up and implement valid findings. Some of those partners may include: Veteran Affairs Central Office (VACO) program offices; VISN and facility leadership; clinical leaders and managers; and individual clinicians.
