US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS                                                                                             BUILDING STRONG®

                                                                                               FACT SHEET

                                                                                         (As of August 2012)

AUTHORIZATION: Section 14, 1946 Flood Control Act, as amended.

TYPE OF PROJECT: Streambank Stabilization.

LOCATION: The project is located in the city of Clarksville, Tenn. on the right descending bank of the Cumberland River alongside Riverside Drive (US 41A Bypass).

CONGRESSIONAL INTEREST: Blackburn (TN-07), Alexander (TN), Corker (TN)

NON-FEDERAL SPONSOR: City of Clarksville, Tenn.

BACKGROUND: Bank erosion is threatening to undermine approximately 1,300 feet of five-lane highway, underground sewer lines, power poles, storm water drains and a guard rail. The project will use riprap to stabilize the eroding bank and provide protection for the endangered utilities.

IMPORTANCE:  Riverside Drive carries on average 30,000 vehicles per day and the loss of the threatened section of the highway would force users onto the city streets that are not built to handle such volume of traffic. The replacement and relocation cost of the endangered facilities including the real estate needed for the relocation of the Riverside Drive is estimated to be $5,548,429 and would be a tremendous financial burden to the City of Clarksville.

STATUS:  Feasibility Study is nearing completion.
