Rear Admiral Robert J. Gilbeau


A native of Fremont, Calif., Rear Admiral Gilbeau graduated from Mission San Jose High School and entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1979. He is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Naval Supply Corps School, Naval Transportation Management School, Naval War College, Naval Postgraduate School, University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business Executive Program and University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Logistic Technologies for Executives program.

Gilbeau is currently assigned as the commander for Defense Contract Management Agency, International in Springfield, Va. He commands a Joint Acquisition Command comprised of over 700 civilian and military personnel globally dispersed over 26 countries, executing the Department of the Defense’s international contract administration business and logistics performance oversight of over 10,000 contracts valued in excess of $50 billion dollars. He is responsible for DCMA’s Contingency Contracting Administrative Services mission in direct support of theater operations throughout Iraq and Afghanistan.

His previous shore tours have included instructor at Naval Transportation Management School; director of Material, Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC), Guam; director of Navy and Marine Corps Aircraft Engine Programs at the NAVICP; deputy assistant chief of staff for Logistics, commander, Naval Air Forces; Material Support Integration Program manager, COMFISC; head of Aviation Material Support for CNO Air Warfare Directorate (N88), and deputy commander for Aviation at NAVICP-Philadelphia.

His operational and afloat tours were assistant to supply officer, USS Guadalcanal (LPH 7); supply officer, USS Harry W. Hill (DD 986); assistant supply officer, USS Boxer (LHD 4); supply officer, USS Nimitz (CVN 68); Crisis Action Team leader – Tsunami Relief and deputy commander and chief of staff for the Joint Contracting Command – Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is a designated Naval Aviation and Surface Warfare Supply Corps officer and a member of the Acquisition Professional Corps. He wears the Legion of Merit (2 awards), Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (4 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards), Combat Action Ribbon and multiple campaign and unit awards.
