WIESBADEN, GERMANY — January 14, 2013 — Jan. 13-18, DoDDS Europe will conduct its 30th Jazz Seminar at Ramstein Air Base. The event will culminate with performances at Kaiserslautern and Ramstein High Schools and the Stadthalle in Landstuhl.
The annual event highlights the Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe's extensive music and arts curriculum for students at the high school level. The 2013 Seminar program will focus on the music of Stan Kenton.
This year the Big Band Jazz Ensemble will consist of 35 students, and the Jazz Vocal Ensemble will feature eight students from schools across Europe. More than 100 students from 20 high schools auditioned for the 35 positions.

Professor Jiggs Whigham, internationally acclaimed jazz trombonist, composer, conductor and educator will lead the Jazz Seminar ensembles in three performances. Whigham is presently conductor of the BBC Big Band in Great Britain and artistic director of the Berlin Jazz Orchestra. Rebecca Brashier, music teacher at Boebligen Middle School, is the director for the Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
This seminar is for students interested in learning about and performing the big band sounds of such classic American composers as Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and other jazz greats. Students will intensively study, read, perform and improvise jazz during the week-long event.
