Career Training
In addition to academic training, Flint Hills Job Corps provides career technical training in the following vocational trades:
Carpentry
This pre-apprenticeship training program is taught by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA). Students in this program work with woods and light gauge metal where they learn to construct, erect, install and repair structures. Students also learn drywall application, residential wall framing, column forms, basic wall forms and footing forms, scaffolding, shingles, and the installation of doors, stairs and cabinets. Students study working drawings and are taught safety practices for using power tools.
Cement Masonry
This pre-apprenticeship training program is taught by the Operative Plasters' and Cement Masons' International of America (OPCMIA). Students in this program learn concrete mixing procedures, cement layout, pouring and finishing, rub and patch application procedure, as well as repair and refurbishing techniques. Student in this program also study working drawings.
Construction Craft Laborer
Students who complete the Construction Craft Laborer program have the comprehensive skills needed to meet the needs of the construction industry. The curriculum follows that of the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). This program is designed to allow students to apply their 2,000 hours of training at Job Corps towards completion of first-year registered apprenticeship-related instruction.
Training includes classroom instruction as well as on-the-job learning with mentoring employers. These employers will give hiring preference to students who complete this program. Certifications include: Forklift/Skid Steer, OSHA 10/30, Jobs for Young Adults, and CPR/First Aid/Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
Culinary Arts
Our Culinary Arts program provides training in a commercial kitchen setting where students learn skills to become cook's helpers, hotel/restaurant cooks, salad/sandwich cooks, and station cooks. Students in this program learn safety, sanitation, cleanup, prep work, banquet setup, and line service. Students also learn how to prepare fish, meat and poultry dishes, along with soups, salads, and desserts.
A student that completes the Culinary Arts program may apply for Advanced Culinary Training at the National Union Job Corps Training Program in San Francisco, California. All transportation is provided free of charge for students accepted into Advanced Culinary Training.
Dental Assistant
Students in our Dental Assistant Program gain certification in Radiation Health & Safety (RHS), Infection Control (ICE), OSHA training for dental professionals, HIPPA training, and CPR & First Aid. Skills include chair-side assisting, dental charting, emergency procedures, recording vital signs, medical and dental terminology which includes basic head and neck anatomy, body systems, communication and listening skills, psychology in the dental office, and ethics and law.
Facility Maintenance Technology
The Facility Maintenance Technology Program is a pre-apprenticeship training program offered by Home Builders Institute (HBI). Students learn a variety of indoor/outdoor work skills such as cement finishing, ground maintenance, drywall, repair/installation of all types of floor surfaces, appliance repair, routine painting, plumbing, electrical wiring, and heating and cooling maintenance. HBI has a national placement program for successful graduates of this training.
Health Occupations
Our Health Occupations training program prepares students to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and Home Health Aides (HHAs). Training is provided in actual health settings where students are taught patient care, medical procedures, recording of vital signs, clinical procedures, geriatric and pediatric care, and in-home health care management. Students completing this training will be expected to pass the state certification requirements. Student must complete this program before applying for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs and pass the required entrance exams.
Plumbing
The pre-apprenticeship training program is taught by the Home Builders Institute (HBI). Students in this program learn to maintain and repair gas pipe and water drainage systems according to specification and plumbing codes. Plumbing students study building plans and work with drawings. HBI has a national placement program for successful graduates of this training.
Security/Law Enforcement
Students in our Security/Law Enforcement program gain communication skills, security and safety skills, and knowledge about courtroom procedures. Students also learn to use and maintain security-related equipment and conduct investigations.
