About USAID

United States Agency for International Development (USAID)

The American people, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), have provided economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide for nearly 50 years. With headquarters in Washington, D.C., USAID's strength is its field offices around the world where it works in close partnership with private voluntary organizations, indigenous organizations, universities, the private sector, international agencies, other governments, and other U.S. Government agencies. USAID provides assistance in five regions of the world: Africa, Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East.

Spending less than one percent of the total federal budget, USAID works in over 100 countries to: promote broadly shared economic prosperity; strengthen democracy and good governance; protect human rights; improve global health; advance food security and agriculture; improve environmental sustainability; further education; help societies prevent and recover from conflicts; and provide humanitarian assistance in the wake of natural and man-made disasters.

USAID Europe and Eurasia (E&E)

Beginning in 1989 in Eastern Europe and then in 1992 in Eurasia, USAID began the historic task of assisting the transition of the Eastern Bloc into free, prosperous, market-oriented democracies. USAID’s support has helped integrate countries into global markets and partnerships, supporting Central and Eastern European states as they prepared for entry into European Union and transatlantic institutions. From 24 original partner countries, 11 have graduated from USAID assistance, 17 have joined the World Trade Organization, and 10 have acceded to the European Union.

USAID Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova

Since 1992, the USAID Mission for Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus, has been working to assist these countries in their transition to a broad-based, market-oriented democracy. In Belarus, USAID works to stimulate the country’s transition to a market-based economy through programs that emphasize economic growth and private sector development, democratic governance, civic activism and community development, as well as social reform and support to vulnerable populations.
