USAID/El Salvador works with the Government of El Salvador to fight corruption through its Sub-Secretariat for Transparency by focusing on government accountability, openness and citizen participation.

Countries with ineffective government, corruption, and weak rule of law have a 30 to 45 percent higher risk of civil war and criminal violence.

Results

2,636 people affiliated with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) received anti-corruption training

This training is in-service technical training with skill or knowledge transfer intended to reduce corruption or leakage in public administration. Nonstate actors such as those affiliated with NGOs, can deter corruption by monitoring performance and serving in a watchdog role. However, these individuals must have the skills and understanding to be able to uncover abuse and use it to hold public officials accountable.

1,907 government officials received anti-corruption training
Anti-corruption training for government officials is skill or knowledge transfer intended to reduce corruption or leakage in public administration. While systems can be designed to reduce incentives and opportunities for corruption, individuals must have the skills to manage those systems and processes, and be aware of the ethical norms related to their roles.
8 anti-corruption measures implemented

Anti-corruption measures are designed to increase transparency, decrease impunity for corrupt acts, and reduce opportunities for corruption. The implementation of these measures by governments or nongovernmental organizations ensures that development resources will not be squandered or mismanaged.

5 mechanisms for external oversight of public resource supported
External oversight mechanisms may be state or non-state, specialized or general and may include the following: parliamentary oversight, civilian review boards, or civil society organizations. These mechanisms provide accountability for the use of resources.
