"Journey to Freedom" Screening to Educate Youth on Trafficking-In-Persons

The U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur together, with the non-governmental organizations Change Your World and Purple Cow’s Project Liber8, jointly organized a screening of the film “Journey to Freedom” in Petaling Jaya on February 2, 2013. U.S. Ambassador Paul Jones attended the screening and spoke about combating trafficking-in-persons as well as how the U.S. government is working closely with government, civil society and people around the world to combat this global phenomenon.
More than 200 people attended the event, including Malaysian college students, media, and Malaysian government officials and civil society that are involved in combatting human trafficking. The 37-minute documentary focused on trafficking-in-persons issues by narrating true stories of slavery in the U.S. as well as modern day slavery in Cambodia. Prior to the screening, guests were treated to a series of creative activities which included a musical band as well as role-play skits by college students that portray real stories of human trafficking that is still happening in Malaysia. All of the activities were meant to be a form of education and to reinforce the message of the short documentary.
At the end of the screening, viewers were encouraged to take up and play an active role in making a change in combating human trafficking problems. A survey form was handed out and the Malaysian youths were eager to put in skills that they were willing to contribute for future events to help spread the message and educate the general public about trafficking-in-persons issues.
