Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Corridor Study, Phase III
Project Number: 9KP46
Project Chief: David Graczyk
Project Topics: Milwaukee metropolitan Sewerage District Water Course, Lake Michigan
Cooperators: Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District
Period of Project: February 2001–Continuing
The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District Corridor Study data will be used to help identify existing waterway limitations, and to evaluate and forecast the potential impacts or improvements from watercourse modifications.
Purpose
Viruses are the cause of many waterborne diseases contracted from fecal-contaminated waters. Collection of samples that properly represent virus concentrations throughout relevant hydrologic periods has historically been difficult due to the large water volume collection and filtration that is required for virus analysis. During this project, an automated process control system was developed to allow for unattended large-volume virus sample collection and filtration over extended duration sampling periods.
Scope
Define the relative magnitude of selected human gasterointestinal waterborne viruses in Milwaukee Area surface waters (the Menomonee Watershed). Data will be collected to determine the overall occurrence and variability, seasonality, year to year variation, and climatic and or hydrologic variation.
Products
Several articles and papers related to the overall MMSD Corridor Study include 2 large SIR’s for Phase I and Phase II. Planned publications for Phase III include and Ecological Summary (SIR), chloride toxicity (JA), Virus sampling and stream toxicity (JA), and summary of emerging contaminant data (SIR).
