Policy Team Intern

Location: Federal Center SW, Washington, D.C.

Start Date/Duration: Immediate; Part-time position

Salary: $10/Hour, 20 hours a week

Description of Responsibilities:

The mission of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) is to coordinate the Federal response on homelessness and to create a national partnership at every level of government and with the private sector to reduce and end homelessness in the nation while maximizing the effectiveness of the Federal Government in contributing to the end of homelessness. Currently USICH is implementing the first-ever Federal Strategic Plan to Prevent and End homelessness, Opening Doors, as the Administration’s response to this important issue. USICH is comprised of 19 federal agencies and entities, and currently chaired by Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki.

USICH is seeking a part-time intern to support its work on behalf of the nation’s homeless population. The position will offer exposure to a range of USICH work with a focus on assisting the Policy Team in coordinating Federal policy issues. The intern will work perform a variety of duties to support the Policy Team, including research, writing, data analysis, administrative support, and maintenance of our internal community engagement database. Work may entail contact and discussion with top personnel at Council member agencies and other government agencies, congressional staff, and the housing industry. Assignments may include work to support key initiatives, projects with policy leads, and strategic communications tasks that support the goals of Opening Doors.

Experience:

Applicants must have strong writing and independent research skills, a working knowledge of HTML programming and relational databases, be able to balance multiple competing tasks and work well under tight deadlines. Experience with Caspio online database software would be highly valuable. Domestic policy knowledge and/or experience is also a plus but not required. Position requires knowledge of Microsoft Office products and professional English writing and grammar conventions. Bachelor’s degree is required. We encourage applications from masters’ students in public policy and public administration programs, or information science programs.
