Albert Pike Public Involvement Process Begins
National Forest managers are proposing to make changes in the long term management and use of the Albert Pike Recreation Area in Montgomery County, Arkansas. Public involvement in the proposed changes is essential.
Background:
Albert Pike Recreation Area (Albert Pike) was first developed by the Forest Service in 1934, beginning with the purchase of two parcels of land from a lumber company. The recreation area has been favored by generations of families who returned to the area year after year.
Modern development and enhancement work at Albert Pike was designed to accommodate recreation demand and specific customer needs, including improved and accessible bathhouse/restroom facilities; more clearly defined campsites; electric and water hook-ups at some sites; updated campsite “furniture”; expanded parking; a day use pavilion; and a sewage dump station for recreational vehicles.
In the 1980’s and 1990’s, 46 campsites and at least 2 bathhouses were available seasonally; Loop C sites and the C bathhouse were open year-round. New bathhouses were constructed during the 1990’s and 2000’s, and Loop C campsites were being re-constructed in 2010. The eight campsites in Loop D had been completed in 2004.
A major flash flood swept through the recreation area on June 11, 2010. Camping has not been permitted at Albert Pike since the 2010 flood occurred.
