Internship Program

The predoctoral internship at the Salem VA Medical Center in Virginia is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. The next site visit is scheduled for October 25 and 26, 2012.

Candidates for internship must be U. S. Citizens from APA-approved programs in clinical or counseling psychology and must be approved for internship by their schools. At the time of application, the intern must have some experience with the MMPI-2 and the WAIS. Also, the candidate should have at least 350 supervised practicum intervention and assessment hours prior to applying. We expect the dissertation proposal to be defended prior to beginning the internship.

The core of the internship training experience is direct patient care under the supervision of experienced, practicing psychologists in diverse settings. The internship has been structured to maximize the number of available clinical experiences, provide sufficient depth of experience, and maintain the flexibility to accommodate individual interests and needs. The internship offers over twenty different clinical training experiences. Most interns complete a series of three major rotations and up to four minor rotations. Major rotations include: Outpatient (Center for Traumatic Stress) or Inpatient PTSD; Substance Abuse; Behavioral Medicine/Primary Care; Neuropsychology; and Outpatient Psychological Services. Some examples of minor rotations are: research, program development, administration, business and consulting, sport psychology, child and adolescent, and forensic psychology.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

We currently offer three fellowships: one with an emphasis on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder ( 1 year), one with an emphasis on Primary Care - Mental Health Integration (PC-MHI) (1 year), and one in the specialty area of Clinical Neuropsychology (2 years). We are recruiting for all three positions to start between July and September 2013.

The overarching goal of the fellowship experience is to provide the fellow with specialized training that will enable him/her to be a leader in his/her emphasis or specialty area. The neuropsychology position also emphasizes the provision of services to rural populations. The overall program provides comprehensive training and clinical experiences designed to teach, develop, and enhance the requisite skills for effective practice in PTSD, primary care, and neuropsychology settings, as well as for effective leadership in these areas. In addition, the program focuses on ensuring competency in the more general practice areas of psychological assessment, diagnosis, treatment, consultation, supervision, and clinical research.

The postdoctoral fellowship at the Salem VA Medical Center is not yet accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association. An application for accreditation is in process, and a site visit expected in 2013. The Salem VA Medical Center has been approved for APPIC membership.

Candidates for the fellowship must be U.S. Citizens from APA-approved programs in clinical or counseling psychology who have completed an APA-accredited internship. Males must have registered with the US Selective Service System before the age of 26. No applicants from programs awarding degrees in areas other than psychology will be accepted. All requirements for the doctoral degree, including dissertations, must be completed prior to starting. Failure to meet all mandatory requirements by the start of the fellowship year may result in the fellowship offer being rescinded. This program supports and adheres to Equal Employment Opportunity policies and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Download the Brochure:
