Colonel Taheri commissioned in May 1989 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the University of Wyoming. In 1991, he graduated from Pilot Training at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma, and subsequently flew C-130's at Pope Air Force Base, Yokota Air Base, and Little Rock Air Force Base as a Formal Training Unit Instructor and Evaluator Pilot. After departing active service in 1999, he joined the North Carolina Air National Guard where he maintained qualification as an Evaluator Pilot and Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System Aircraft Commander.
