BeTobaccoFree.gov Website Offers More With Less
By Julie Weckerlein
Visitors of the recently-launched BeTobaccoFree.gov website can now more easily find and share content related to tobacco use and health information.
The site was created to consolidate all the tobacco-related resources from across the department, which includes the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, among others. An editorial board consisting of representatives from all the HHS operating divisions weeded out redundant or outdated information, and improved the content of what remained.
As Karen Silver wrote on the HHS Digital Strategy Digitalk blog, the result was the BeTobaccoFree.gov site, which offers a range of formats, including text, video, audio, and infographics.
Social media plays a big part throughout the site. All of the information is easily shared over a variety of social media platforms by the various share tools offered throughout the site. In addition to the usual Facebook and Twitter share buttons, the BeTobaccoFree site also offers Pinterest, Tumblr, MySpace, Google+, Digg, LinkedIn, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and Delicious.
These buttons are available throughout the site, on every page. There is also a separate gallery for all the site’s infographics.
The “Say It, Share It” page also operates as a social media dashboard, allowing the site user to see at a glance all the ways BeTobaccoFree.gov is appearing on social media networks. Displayed in a clean, colorful, and modular format, information from Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Tumblr is readily available in one location. This includes infographics and podcasts.
In the future, other social media platforms will be added as the site expands its reach.
