View the Roadmap to Excellence

Be safe. Be secure. Be prepared.

Each day, thousands of dedicated employees start the engines of their buses to provide over 15 million passenger trips in large and small cities, towns and rural areas. Together, we are responsible to support transit providers as they plan and carry out daily activities that support these trips while ensuring the safety and security of their passengers, employees and communities.

FTA and its Program Partners are aware of the enormous challenges facing your transit agency as it works to address safety, security and emergency preparedness priorities.

The Transit Bus Safety and Security Program is based on belief in the power of partnerships with federal and state agencies, transit associations and transit agencies working together to voluntarily achieve success in supporting your safety, security and emergency preparedness needs.

The Program is founded on the philosophy that “one-size does not fit all,” recognizing that each transit agency operates within a unique context of its own resources and its own on-the- ground realities. Therefore, great care is being taken to ensure that technical resources provided through this Program are flexible enough to meet your unique demands yet still comprehensively support key safety, security and emergency preparedness principles. The Roadmap to Excellence provides the structure to meet these objectives.

Elements of the Roadmap are based on recognized industry guidelines for achieving safety, security and emergency preparedness excellence. These elements include Management, Human Resources, Operations, Maintenance, Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness. The extensive library of technical assistance resource materials housed on the Program website to assist you in addressing these elements are a result of research on transit best practices, agency onsite reviews, input from industry experts, and feedback from the Program Working Group. Meeting your needs has been the paramount focus of all Program efforts.
