Height Modernization is a program within NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS) that provides accurate height
information by integrating Global Positions System (GPS) technology with existing survey techniques.
For years, GPS has been used to determine accurate positions (latitude and longitude), but now, by following
Height Modernization standards, specifications and techniques, GPS can efficiently establish accurate elevations
for all types of positions and navigational needs.
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in conjunction with Montana’s NGS Advisor Curt Smith, has made the
commitment to take the lead in pursuing Height Modernization program for the state of Montana.
The first step was to hold a Height Mod Forum at MDT headquarters which took place in Helena, Montana on Tuesday, October 17.
Accurate elevations influences a great many aspects of geographic information systems (GIS) from flood plain mapping
to orthophotography.
