The U.S. Coast Guard announces operating procedures for Cook Inlet ice conditions.

USCG APPROVES RECERTIFICATION - Read the letter from Rear Admiral Thomas Ostebo, Commander 17th Coast Guard District.

QUARTERLY COUNCIL MEETING - Presentations from the December 7th Board meeting have been posted. The next Council and Annual meetings will be scheduled for late March 2013, in Kenai.

BOARD POSITIONS AND COMMITTEE VACANCIES - Certified recreation groups with interests in Cook Inlet will elect a representative and alternate to serve on the Council for three years, beginning in March 2013. Groups wishing to participate in the nomination and election process should call Jerry at 907-283-7222. Opportunities to volunteer also exist on our Prevention, Response, Operations and Safety Committee and Environmental Monitoring Committee. JACK-UP RIG SPECIFICATIONS - Specs for the new Buccaneer and Furie Jack-Up Rigs in Cook Inlet have been posted.

Legacy Award

On March 24, 1989, the oil tanker, Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Alaska’s Prince William Sound. The incident also changed forever the way crude oil is transported in the United States.

In the aftermath of the Exxon oil spill, Congress crafted a comprehensive oil spill prevention bill. The Oil Pollution Act (OPA) of 1990 is the result of public hearings around the state where citizens and local government leaders demanded public involvement in the oversight of oil transportation.
